An unofficial Mercedes-Benz Hexawheel concept
Engineered by Siyamak Rouhi Dehkordi, a Mechanical Engineer from Iran, this concept represents a unique approach off a Mercedes-Benz off-roader. Dubbed the Mercedes-Benz Hexawheel, the conceptual off-roader utilizes – of all things – six wheels.
The premise is simple: ants (along with various other insects) benefit from an articulated design, meaning their various body sections can move independently of one another. Compare ants to say, a tortoise, which has a fixed body and moving legs (i.e, the same design as a traditional car/SUV), and it’s clear that the ant benefits from a much greater degree of agility on various terrains than the tortoise. Applying this concept to his design study, Dehkordi created the Mercedes Hexawheel.
This six-wheeled Unimog-type concept is designed for all-terrain use, suitable for overcoming boulders and climbing mountains. Siyamak has also correctly decided to model the 16-ft long Hexawheel using classic Merc design language.
Up front, it has a short, main seating compartment for up to three people, while the rear storage area is connected via a hinged, hydraulically regulated joint. As a result, the Mercedes Hexawheel’s wheelbase length is substantially reduced, allowing the front half to navigate obstacles independently of the rear.
The frame has two degrees of freedom and is operated with a hydraulic system. A diesel engine would put power through a “flexible hydraulic power transmission system” to all six wheels.
Dehkordi says the design allows for substantial vertical articulation — the frame can theoretically travel 28 degrees up and 30 degrees down. A pair of hydraulic rams controls the articulation, provides dampening, and in some instances, work to help push the Hexawheel over large obstacles.
The Hexawheel’s rear section pivots laterally, allowing the 16-foot long vehicle to have an 18-foot turning radius. Further enhancing its prowess off-road is its balanced drivetrain. Dehkordi’s design calls for a diesel-hydraulic drive system, with the engine, pump, and accumulators placed underneath the pickup bed. The fuel tank, located under the cab, helps distribute truck’s 4850-pound curb weight.
The main dimensions are a total length of 4.8 meters, two equal wheelbases of 0.95 meters and a ground clearance of 46 cm, while the weight is equally distributed among the three axles.
Created by Iranian mechanical engineer Siyamak Rouhi Dehkordi, the Hexawheel Concept is an extreme three-seater off-roader targeted to adventurous customers and people who need to move in extremely difficult conditions and terrains.
