The first Mercedes to drop the Benz name is here and it is produced entirely by AMG, as an indirect successor of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The shunning of the reference to Benz in the name of its latest model is part of a wider initiative to more closely link AMG’s future road cars with Mercedes-Benz’s F1 operations, which go under the title Mercedes AMG F1, according to officials.
First sports car engine with ‘hot inside V’ and dry sump lubrication
The new AMG V8 engine has two turbochargers which are not mounted on the outside of the cylinder banks but rather inside the V configuration – experts call it a ‘hot inside V’. The benefits are a compact engine design, an optimum response and low exhaust gas emissions. Dry sump lubrication allows the engine to be installed lower, which moves the center of gravity closer to the road and forms the basis for high lateral acceleration. The M178 (in-house designation) from AMG is thus the world’s first sports car engine with hot inside V and dry sump lubrication. With a dry weight of 209 kg the new AMG V8 is also the lightest engine in its competitive segment.
Powerful V8 engines have long been a core competence at AMG, the performance brand from Mercedes-Benz. On this occasion, Mercedes-AMG GmbH is entirely responsible for both development and production. The AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine is a new development at the sporting heart of the new Mercedes-AMG GT car. This innovative eight-cylinder unit stands out for its sublime power delivery, the purposeful lightweight construction, as well as its high efficiency and environmental compatibility.
Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “V8 engines are an integral part of the AMG philosophy and the brand’s commitment to ‘Driving Performance’. The V8 biturbo engine for our new GT is going to delight our customers!”
The new sports car engine follows in an impressive V8 tradition that started in 1967 with the M100 in the legendary 300 SEL 6.8 AMG racing car and continues with trendsetting features of the future.
2 versions of the Mercedes-AMG
The first one is called Mercedes-AMG GT and it will be available sometime in late 2015 or early 2016. In the AMG GT, the engine will develop 335 kW/456 HP and 443 pound feet of torque from 1,600 to 5,000rpm. Mercedes says it’s good enough for 0-62mph/0-100kmh acceleration in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 189 mph/304 kmh.
The second one is called Mercedes-AMG GT S and strange enough, it will be available before the first version, in April 2015. In the Mercedes-AMG GT S, small changes to the engine, plus a performance exhaust system with variable valves increase power to 375 kW/ 510 HP and 479 pound-feet of torque/650 Nm from 1,750-4,750rpm. Acceleration from 0-62/ 0-100 kmh is estimated to be done in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 193 mph/ 310 kmh.
Backing both versions in this rear-drive coupe is a balance-enhancing 7-speed AMG SpeedShift DCT dual-clutch automatic transaxle that includes steering-wheel-mounted paddles and multi-mapping modes that can be punched up using AMG Dynamic Select controls on the center console. All the weight out back gives the coupe a 47:53 weight distribution from front to rear. The trick drivetrain gets wrapped up in an aluminum spaceframe chassis with a double-wishbone suspension at all four corners that boasts aluminum-forged components. The GT S version also comes with a Race program setting as well as an electronic locking rear differential that functions even more efficiently than the conventional mechanical unit found in the GT.
Drawing on the “technological DNA of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG,” the aluminum-intensive double wishbone suspension setup in the new GT has been tuned to provide an ideal mix of precision feel and consummate control. Stepping up to GT S spec adds electronically controlled (Comfort/Sport/Sport plus) damping as well as speed-sensitive variable- ratio power steering. The top-line model also offers an AMG Dynamic Plus Package with continuously adjustable engine and transmission mounts that work with the AMG Chassis Controller to enhance overall precision and lateral grip as real-time driving conditions demand. Finally, GT S kit includes larger conventional disc brakes that those found on the GT. However both models can be upfitted with fade-banishing carbon ceramic super stoppers hidden behind the 19 inch wheels.
Mercedes does a real magic trick with the styling of the GT. The two-seater has retro touches from the 300SL like the single-bar chrome grille and bubble roof. However, it’s all tied together well enough that only a wisp of the past comes through in the modern coupe form. While sharing a similar overall design theme with the outgoing Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS too, the bold bodywork on the new Mercedes-AMG GT brings its own distinctive character.
Up front there’s just a big prominent Mercedes star nestled in an oval grille with two hungry air intakes at the lower corners. From there, the hood with dual power-domes hides that new V8 and leads to the bubble canopy that flows to the tapered rear. One interesting detail is where the hood meets the windscreen. Or rather where it doesn’t. The fact the two are separate allows a much steeper rake for the front screen, with benefits to visibility as well as styling;
There’s a rear wing that extends and retracts depending on speed and driving mode, and it’s part of an in-depth aerodynamics package that runs from the front splitter to rear diffuser via an almost flat underbody.
The AMG GT S also comes with extra goodies like the active exhaust system, a standard electronic rear locking differential, gloss black accenting on the front splitter , larger 20-inch rear wheels (rather than the 19×19 set on the AMG GT) plus the option of forged wheels and sport tires, and an optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package that optimizes handling and ride quality. In the Mercedes-AMG GT the conventional front-hinged doors replace the “gullwing” units on the SLS.
The high-performance character of the new Mercedes-AMG GT is found in its hand-crafted passenger compartment, as well, which matches fine Nappa leather with various chrome, carbon fiber and fiberglass accent elements. Deeply bolstered, low-mounted bucket seats flank a prominent center console that houses the AMG Drive Unit with the car’s primary function controls. Attention to detail is also echoed in this AMG DRIVE UNIT controls: they are arranged like eight cylinders in a V layout, emphasising the powerful and high-tech impression made by the center console.
This driver-centric realm also features an AMG flat-bottom multifunction sport steering wheel and bespoke AMG instrument cluster as well as the latest generation of M-B’s Command telematics system with an 8.4-inch screen and touchpad controller. So, the two-seater is a straightforward, comfortable and reliable companion for everyday motoring thanks to its practical tailgate, easily accessible luggage compartment, high level of comfort on long journeys and the extensive Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive assistance systems.
On the safety front, the new Mercedes-AMG GT comes with numerous standards found on the new S-Class including Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Adaptive Brake, Attention Assist, Pre-Safe, Parktronic and a rearview camera, while Lane Keeping Assist and Blind Spot Assist will be optional.
Designed to be as comfortable on a race track as it is on a cross-country drive, this high-intensity newcomer matches a light, strong and rigid core structure largely crafted from aluminum with equally lightweight bodywork and competition-inspired powertrain/suspension elements – features that should ensure its status as a primo performer on every level. As Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH notes, the second vehicle to be developed independently by the organization is manufactured according to the motto “Handcrafted By Racers” and directly “fulfills our high aspirations with regard to driving dynamics, agility and sportiness.”
