Mercedes Nimbus – project Slavchev Tanevski from Munich University of apllied Sciences , the designer is already known to you through the magnificent Mercedes-Benz Aria. The project was completed during the internship Slavchev in Mercedes Exterior Design Studio , with the support of the exterior designer Michael Fry (Michael Frei) and the chief exterior designer Robert Forester (Robert Lesnik).

Slavchev task was to develop a specialized car taxi with an innovative layout, new visual and practical solutions for the city in 2025.

The designer decided to use layout with four electric motors built into the hub and lithium ion batteries under the floor. This made it possible to promote the driver’s seat forward and place an additional row of seats. The driver sits in the center and has excellent overview due to the absence of the front pillars and glass dome like a fighter. Above his head is a driver element, and aerodynamic and protective function, as well as visually separates the passenger space from his workplace. According Slavchev such visor gives the car a certain character and makes her “friendly”.

Passenger space accommodates up to 5 adults or 3 with luggage. Large windows give plenty of light and opportunity to enjoy the surrounding scenery. The trunk is very low, between the rear wheels, and is designed as a drawer.

Style Mercedes Nimbus – a tribute to the world’s first motorized taxi Victoria , built by Daimler in 1897. The driver’s cab, visually separated from the passenger compartment, large and narrow wheels give Nimbus some similarities with this wagon.

The main lines are inspired by decorative ornaments that allows the machine to perfectly fit into the historic architecture of European cities. Slavchev calls this element retro design of the car.

Element of modernity is the wide use of transparent surfaces (polycarbonate) and aerodynamic elements, as well as in the use of symbolic forms, such as a drop or a boomerang, expressing the dynamics. Graphics Rack simulates traditional grille Mercedes – Benz . Small bulges on the sidewalls should emphasize the strength of the vehicle and the low center of gravity. Hidden lighting fixtures made for greater brevity appearance Nimbus .

The Mercedes-Benz Nimbus was conceived during my internship at Mercedes Exterior Design Studio (10.2009-03.2010). My task was to design a special taxi vehicle with an innovative package, new visual and practical solutions for the cities of 2025.

I chose a technical package of 4 wheel hub electric engines and Li-Ion Battery situated in the floor. This enabled the driver to be positioned further to the front, which gave the opportunity for another row of seats to be placed. The driver sits in the middle and has great visibility due to the lack of Α-pillars and the sculptural jet-fighter-like glass dome. Above the driver there is an element which has aerodynamical and protective purpose and visually separates the passenger cell from driver’s space. It also makes the car character-like and friendly.

The passenger space is spacey and can welcome up to 5 adults, or 3 passengers plus luggage. The atmosphere inside is bright due to the big panorama glass surfaces designed for the passengers to be able to watch the scenery while driven. The luggage compartment is positioned very low, between the back wheels and functions as a drawer.

Styling-wise it’s a homage to the first motor taxi in the world, the Victoria (1897), designed by Daimler. Due to the optically separated and rather vertical passenger cell, as well as the big and narrow wheels the vehicle looks like a modern carriage. The main lines are inspired by flowy ornaments and this how the car fits in the old architecture of the European cities. This is the retro element of the car. The modern element is the high percentage of glass (polycarbonate) surfaces and the aero elements, as well as the use of symbolic shapes like drop and boomerang, which express dynamism.

At the front the glass part is cut to simulate the traditional Mercedes grille. On the side appear chunky volumes to accent the solidity of the car and the low point of gravity. In the back there are two main volumes showing the passenger- and the luggage compartment. These are finished in glass again to give the car a lighter appearance, and enable the LED displays to be visible. The displays are to be used as advert space. Both elements are wrapped by two aero edges on both sides.
The lights are hidden in favor of the simplicity of the design.

The project was supported by exterior designers Michael Frei, Robert Lesnik and exterior chefdesigner Klaus Frenzel.”
