2004 Mercedes-Benz Vision “R”

After Mercedes-Benz launched Vision GST II they took it even further. “Vision R”, which appeared at the 2004 Paris Motor Show, was a European version of the Grand Sports Tourer. It differed in having, at 2.98 meters, a 23.5 centimeter shorter wheelbase than the version of January 2004. A four-plus-two-seater, it was 4.92 meters long and offered generous interior space.

The six passengers get pampered by comfortable, single seats as well as a level of spaciousness that exceeds that of many luxury sedans. Moreover, the interior is fitted with fine leather, decorative ash wood, and shiny aluminum, giving the interior an upscale atmosphere.

Vision R was powered by a prototype of a new V6 diesel engine which made a natural choice for a car in this category. Equipped with common-rail direct injection and a VNT turbocharger, this three-liter CDI unit developed maximum power of 160 kW (218 hp) and maximum torque of 510 Newton meters. The effortless power of this engine was matched only by its refinement and by fuel consumption of less than nine liters per 100 km. Vision R is equipped with 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission

Perhaps most impressive is that the R’s exhaust emissions meet Europe’s stringent EU-4 standards, and the additive-free particulate filter system developed by Mercedes also reduces soot emissions.

Soon after that, Mercedes-Benz launched the R – class.
